Be Reyt sock yarn comes in 50 gram skeins, making it perfect for colour work socks. I’m a huge fan of stripey socks, and they’re the perfect way to play with colour while keeping life simple. With almost 30 colours to choose from the hardest bit might be picking your favourite shades.

Be Reyt Stripey Socks – The Opposites

pair of hand knit striped socks in navy and pale silver. The colours re switched so one sock mirrors the other.

This isn’t a sock pattern as such, so you can apply these notes to your favourite sock pattern.

Knitted in navy (colour A) and naked silver (colour B) Be Reyt sock yarn.

For sock one (front sock) cast on in colour A and work 10 rounds in rib. I’ve used knit one, purl one rib, but go with whatever makes you happy.

The leg is worked by knitting 72 rounds.

Rounds 1 – 8 : colour A

Round 9 : colour B

Rounds 10 – 16 : colour A

Rounds 17 – 18 : colour B

Rounds 19 – 24 : colour A

Rounds 25 – 27 : colour B

Rounds 28 – 32 : colour A

Rounds 33 – 36 : colour B

Rounds 37 – 40 : colour A

Rounds 41 – 45 : colour B

Rounds 46 – 48 : colour A

Rounds 49 -54 : colour B

Rounds 55 – 56 : colour A

Rounds 57 -63 : colour B

Round 64 : colour A. Break off colour A at end of round.

Rounds 65 – 72 : colour B

Using colour B work the heel and foot until you are one round short of starting shaping for the toe. Break off colour B, join colour A and complete the sock.

The second sock is a mirror of the first, so work with naked silver as colour A and navy as colour B.

You’re guaranteed perfectly mirrored stripey socks.

Be Reyt Stripey Socks – The Matched Pair

Personally I don’t need my socks to be identical, although I do prefer it if it looks like they at least know each other. Opinions vary on this though, and the idea of mismatched socks fills some people with horror. So if you’d like to knit perfectly matched socks here’s how.

Again this isn’t a sock pattern as such, so you can apply these notes to your favourite sock pattern. Knitted in teal (colour A) and naked silver (colour B) Be Reyt sock yarn.

Rounds 28 – 32 : colour A

Using colour B work the heel flap and turn, pick up stitches on either side of the heel flap and work one round.

Continuing shaping per your pattern work alternating rounds of colours A and B until you are one round short of starting shaping for the toe. Break off colour B. Use colour A to complete the sock.

Work the second sock in the same way.

You’re guaranteed perfectly matching stripey socks.

A Few More Notes

Managing Jogs

You may get a jog in your knitting where you change colours. There are lots of ways to manage this if it bothers you, and google will offer you lots of things to try. Personally I’m unbothered by the jog, and I work my socks so it’s on the inside of both legs.

The explanation for how to do this is probably more complicated than actually doing it.

The sock for the right foot wants to have the heel flap worked so the flap finishes at the beginning of the round. On a 64 stitch sock I’d knit 32 stitches, then work the heel flap over the next 32 stitches.

The sock for the left foot wants to have the heel flap worked so the flap starts at the beginning of the round. On a 64 stitch sock I’d work the heel flap over the first 32 stitches of the round.

Toe Up Socks

If you prefer to work your socks toe up follow the colour sequence from the end to the beginning.
