Rainbows Superhero Genes

When we moved to working mainly from home we knew that self striping sock yarn was going to be one of the trickier things to manage. Dyeing the long runs of colour necessary to make the stripes needs a bit of kit that lives at the workshop. So there will be less self striping for now and more of the things we can easily do at home.

However I am still in the workshop at least once a week – it’s a few minutes walk away and as there’s only me there I can socially distance very easily. So we decided that we wanted to make a special batch of self striping yarn. Back in April 2019 we launched the first of our Superhero Genes colourways. It’s almost a year on from that first batch. The world is a very different place. Some of those affected by genetic disorders are at increased risk from Corona virus. So it’s very much still a charity that we want to support.

The names for the original colours came from my lovely friend Scully, and are inspired by her brother Adam who died in 2019. Scully and her mum  asked that money raised from this yarn goes to Jeans for Genes Day.

Jeans for Genes Day is the annual fundraising campaign for Genetic Disorders UK, the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by a genetic disorder.

Monies raised on Jeans for Genes Day fund the work of the charity and provide grants to organisations for projects that aim to transform the lives of children with genetic disorders.

We’ll be donating 50% of the purchase price of these yarns to Genetic Disorders UK. The remaining 50% covers the yarn costs, VAT, tax and dye costs. In turn that means we can make more of these yarns available and hopefully raise more money for this charity.

If you’d like to donate to Jeans for Genes Day you can do so here

A quick note about how these yarns will be packaged – usually we sell self striping yarns in cakes rather than skeins. This helps differentiate them from the non self striping stuff at shows. However for now all of our self striping yarn will be dispatched as skeins as this allows us to put parcels straight into the post box rather than having to go to the post office – and hopefully it means your postie can get the parcel into your letter box rather than needing to hand it over.
