I have a real love hate relationship with self striping sock yarn. I love the colours and how much fun it is to work with. I’m less enamoured with all of the prep that goes into making it happen. It’s worth it though. So this week we have 11 new self striping sock yarns in the shop.
First up are the rainbow self striping sock yarns. These are created by dyeing a very long skein in eight different colours, then (apart from the Ultimate Rainbow) overdyeing with another colour.
The samples are all knitter on a silver reed knitting machine in ribber so they’re worked in the round. A bit of fiddling with tension dials let me match the tension I’d get on 2mm knitting pins (which would be my go to size for socks in this yarn). Worked on 64 stitches the swatches give you a good idea of how the yarn will look if you make socks, mitts or some other narrow tube.
The second batch of self striping has three quarters or so of a long skein dyed in one colour and the remaining quarter split into three colours. This gives wide stripes on the main colour and narrow stripes of each of the three colours.
