After 19 years it’s time for us to shut up shop as The Knitting Goddess.

Before getting into the reasons for this we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us from our beginnings selling via ebay right up till now. It’s been lovely to meet people at shows and chat to customers online – and that’s the thing I’m going to miss most of all.

Why are we closing?

Lots of things have contributed to this decision. Higher prices for raw materials and utilities haven’t helped. Neither has a rent increase. Neither has the loss of most of our business to the EU after Brexit.
Those are the negatives.

So it’s been tougher than it has in a while – and we bet that’s true for most small businesses out there. We could have kept going – and in many ways that would have been the easy choice. Work smarter. Work harder. We talked about a lot of options. But there are other things we want to be doing which leads me to the good stuff that we’ll be doing instead.

The good reasons.

As well as The Knitting Goddess we also run The Unruly Stitch and Bobbie & Joy. We’re in the final stages of rebranding Bobbie & Joy, and we’re looking forward to sharing that with you. We want to spent more time on these businesses. We’re looking forward to them not being an afterthought. If you’ve seen any of our embroidered or glass goods, that’s the kind of thing we’ll be doing more of. We exhibited work at Sheffield Millennium Gallery Hand Made Christmas last year, and we’d love to do much more of that. There are only so many hours in the day and this is how we’d prefer to use them.

Why now?

The lease on the workshop is up in early June, so we either sign up for another 3 years with increased rent or we get out. We’re getting out. We’ve been thinking about changing things for a while, so this was the nudge that got us moving. It means being able to work from home and saving a whole lot of overheads. Right now that feels very appealing. It opens up a whole lot of new possibilities and we’re excited about that.

What happens now?

The first job for us to to clear the stock we have left – and code CLOSING15 will save you 15% on everything in the shop. The code can’t be used alongside any other code. Then we’ll find homes for shelving and so on. There will be a sample sale too, as we’re not going to need all of the show samples.

What about my Goddess Points?

You can spend them. I’m not sure how long it will take for our remaining stock to sell, so we’ll keep adding goddess points to your total for now. Once The Knitting Goddess is closed any remaining points will have no value.

What about Yarn Clubs?

Annual yarn club members will continue to receive the parcels they’ve paid for until the club ends with the November parcel, and they’ve received an email from us with more details.

Customers who pay for one club parcel at a time will receive their last parcel in May.

What about Advent Calendars?

We’ll be in a position to dye yarn for advent calendars before we leave the workshop, and we’ll have scope to do a limited amount of dyeing once we move out. Once I get the remaining stock shifted I’ll start a sign up list for those interested in an advent calendar.

When will orders be posted?

As quickly as possible! We usually manage to get orders received before 1400 posted the same day, but if it gets very busy it might take us a day or two longer. As always we’ll let you know when your order has been packed and give you tracking information.
