About The Knitting Goddess - Elizabeth Ann Ley

This website is dedicated to sharing my love of knitting by teaching the basics of knitting, providing fun and easy projects to try at home, original pattern designs and beautiful yarns that are under my original yarn label: The Knitting Goddess.

My mother, Evelyn taught me to knit when I was 10 years old by using a poem:
“In the tiny bunny hole,
Round  the big tree,
Out through the bunny hole,
And off she hops!”
Do you remember this poem?

My mother was a knitting perfectionist. But I am not! Mom’s friends used to say that her garments were made so perfectly that you could wear them inside out. And mine; well let’s just say that there is a reason for a right side and a wrong side. We always seemed to butt heads when it came to our knitting lessons. Teaching me to knit was rather a loud affair. It wasn’t the actual knitting that was loud – it was the instructions.  No simple scarf for my first project.  NO!   My first project was a V-Neck pullover with set-in sleeves. Our creative differences lead to rather loud knitting! Mom being Mom and I being the child, off the needles would my work come as she insisted on my pursuit of her perfection. However, I am forever grateful for that time we spent together. I can never thank her enough for passing on her love of knitting to me.

From this love of knitting, I pursued a home economics degree where I could explore my love of fiber. I followed that with a Masters in Home Economics, after which I owned a knit shop for many years. I sold yarn, my own designs and taught many classes. I still enjoy sharing the art of knitting with others. I teach a variety of classes and workshops throughout the country.

I have decided to bring my love for knitting to the web. I have created this website to share my love and joy of knitting by reaching out to those who might not have a nearby yarn shop and who can’t attend in-person classes and for those who want to experience the joys of knitting. I also offer a variety of classes and workshops for those in the Chicago area, or who wish to travel here.

Please look around my site. Try some of my original designs, yarns, patterns, easy-to-follow knitting instructions and classes. If you have any questions feel free to email me via the ‘Contact Me’ link at the top of this page. I love hearing from other knitters.

And remember my motto, “it is always a perfectly heavenly day for knitting”! Elizabeth
